New Sustainability Projects at Bucks Run

Blog Post By: Craig McKinley, Grounds Department

It is finally that time of year to get out and enjoy some spring golf. The course opened for the season on Friday, March 31st. The staff at Bucks Run have been hard at work preparing the golf course and all other amenities on the property for your enjoyment. The greens have come out of winter beautifully, and have been rolled a few times to firm them up and smooth them after winter. The Grounds Crew has been busy cleaning-up debris from the wind storm a couple weeks ago, but all playable surfaces are clean and ready for play!

In our last blog, we touched on our new, on-site vermicomposting that we started during the winter (click here to read about our new vermicompost program). We also teased about some other fun facility projects to aid us in becoming more sustainable. The first of these new sustainability projects involves the purchase of two young goat kids! In just a few short months, these goats will help us maintain native areas and wetlands. As you could expect, goats have a knack for clearing brush and keeping out invasive plant species, such as the Autumn Olive. Once they have adapted to their new home, our goats will be staked-out during the day in order to reach places that are difficult for humans to reach and areas that are sensitive to pesticides.

Another project we have undertaken is bringing farm fresh eggs to the Bucks Run menu! We purchased Isa Brown chicks, which are now 2 weeks old. In just a few short months, they will start producing eggs for our restaurant. Once they are big enough, they will be moved to a coop, which will give them plenty of room to roam. We are excited for the opportunity to offer these humanely-raised farm fresh eggs to our customers in an effort to obtain ingredients more locally and sustainably.

As the season progresses, there will be more projects and updates to come, so please continue to follow our blog closely. We would also like to remind our golfers to please repair ball marks and divots while you are enjoying your round of golf. We are all excited to have you at Bucks Run and hope to see you on the course soon!
