Winter Review & Spring Updates

Although the recent temps don't show it, spring has arrived here at Bucks Run! While this winter was mild, it was not without its worries. Around the first of the year, we had a freezing-rain event on top of our snow cover. This created a sheet of ice 2-3 inches.

New Topdressing Program

A Blog Post By: Craig McKinley, Course Superintendent

Last season, we changed our topdressing program from a relatively heavy topdressing every few weeks, to a lighter one every Monday. We feel that switching to this light, weekly rate will not only keep greens smoother and truer for putting, but also allows us to work more sand into the green's profile.

A frequently asked question is, "Why sand?"  Well, greens.

Spring Lawn Tip

Along with course updates, I like to provide periodic lawn tips to our readers. Hopefully your lawn is showing some signs of life by now. It’s getting close to treating your lawn preventatively for Crabgrass. Usually, you can find a nice, granular product with fertilizer and pre-emerge Crabgrass control. Probably starting this weekend, through the first week of May, would be a good time to apply.

If you would like to use science and not just a.

We are Open!

The course is officially open for play for the 2015 season. Opening day is always an exciting time. The weather forecast has things feeling a bit more spring like starting this Saturday.

On Monday, we cut greens for the first time, cut new cups, and raked bunkers. This time of year we have a skeleton crew of three. Throughout this week, they will concentrate on course clean up, adding sand to bunkers, and rolling greens..

The Slow Melt

The snow continues to disappear on the course. The recent warm weather prompted a nice, slow melt, and as of today, we are about 85% snow free. The slow melt helps reduce water on the course and it also reduces the chance of the river flooding. Overall, the grass that we have been able to see looks very healthy. We have some snow mold activity in the fairways, which should grow out pretty quickly. The greens and tees look great and we are very happy with how they came.

The Winter Thaw

The first late winter thaw is upon us. We will be flirting with temperatures near 50 until next Tuesday the 16th. With no significant rain being forecast in that time frame, it should be a nice gradual thaw. A gradual thaw will help with reduced flooding and decrease the probability of an ice flow dam on the river.  Also in this time frame, we should lose most of the snow that is on the ground. All good news so far.

On the.

Winter Deep Freeze

The deep freeze that normally accompanies winter has set in recently. The actual temperature arriving at the course last Friday was -27 degrees Fahrenheit, and yesterday (Monday) was -19. Luckily, we have a nice blanket of snow insulating the fragile grass plant. If exposed to that type of temperature for extended periods, the grass could be set back in spring green-up or worst case, death. At this time, I don’t have worries for either event occurring. In most.

Tree Work & Safety

As the winter rolls along, tree work on the course continues. We were fortunate to have minimal snow in December, which allowed us to move about the course easily and clean up after each tree was cut down. This winter’s focus is once again the removal of dead or dying Ash trees and removal of trees surrounding some greens, to allow more light to the putting surface.

The Ash trees, for the most part, will be extinct on.
