Fall at Bucks Run

Blog Post By: Craig McKinley, Grounds Department

Fall golf is almost upon us here at Bucks Run. Cool mornings and beautiful fall colors will be showing up soon, as well as some great golfing weather. Fall, for Turf Managers, means prepping the golf course for winter and the next spring. With summer stress (for the most part) being a thing of the past, it is time to get turf strong going into the winter months, which, in turn, equals strong turf coming out of winter. Turf grows roots the most rapidly during the spring and the fall when soil temps are mild and day time highs aren’t extreme. Therefore, our goal during these months is to maximize the potential the turf has in growing deep roots and building carbohydrate stores going into the winter.

The most important tool we use also happens to be the most hated practice by golfers. I am talking about aerification. Every year, the question is asked “do we really need to aerify?” and the answer is a resounding "yes"! Let’s say an average course sees 20,000 rounds of golf per year. That equals approximately 10,000 times that carts drive on fairways, and if every golfer takes only 50 steps per green, that is one million steps taken on each green in that year. That does not include the mowers, rollers, and maintenance work on turf either. So, by this time of year, soils are compacted and need a deep breath. The aerification process allows compacted soils to be relieved, oxygen and water to rapidly enter the soil profile, as well as removing thatch. What we do this fall makes the difference between healthy turf next year and turf that will struggle during the next year’s summer months. We have begun aerifying fairways this week and will be completed by the middle of next week.

I hope you all have a great September and come visit Bucks Run during my favorite golfing season. As always, please continue to repair your ball marks and replace your divots.
